Do I need a permit to replace siding in New Jersey?
Usually not on a one- or two-family home. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs lists the repair or replacement of any amount of existing siding on those homes as ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7, so no permit is filed. The exception is polypropylene siding, which the bulletin says is not ordinary maintenance.
One- and two-family homes
The Department of Community Affairs bulletin on ordinary maintenance (March 5, 2018) lists siding under one- and two-family dwellings: the repair or replacement of any amount of existing siding. Its stated exception is that the repair or replacement of polypropylene siding is not ordinary maintenance.
The bulletin also says ordinary maintenance is not a waiver from code compliance. The work still has to meet code; it just does not need a permit or an inspection.
Other buildings
For buildings other than dwellings, the same bulletin limits ordinary maintenance to repairing or replacing existing siding with like material on no more than 25 percent of the total exterior wall, and says installing any amount of polypropylene siding requires a permit.
